Volunteer Experience at the Holly Springs Food Cupboard By- Evelyn Jinu

Volunteering at the Holly Springs Food Cupboard from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. was a truly meaningful and eye opening experience. The staff welcomed us warmly and explained the tasks for the day, beginning with work in the community garden. We were given green onion seedlings to plant in the garden beds, and the boys (Eugene, Thiran, and Jebin) joined me and along with the adult volunteers in planting the seedlings, watering them with fertilizer, and finally sowing turnip and radish seeds. It was inspiring to see how even small actions in the garden help provide fresh, healthy food for families in need.

After the garden work, we moved in to help prepare collard greens for distribution. Together, we washed, sorted, and peeled the greens, carefully picking out the best leaves and filling 25 labeled bags for families who had pre booked their food through the sign up system. This part of the work helped us understand how much care and organization goes into making sure each family receives quality produce.

The employees thanked us for our help and even took a group picture to remember the day. Learning that the food cupboard has been serving the community for about 13 years made the experience even more meaningful. It reminded all of us that volunteering, teamwork, and simple acts of service can make a real difference in people’s lives.

Overall, this experience taught us the value of working together, helping others, and appreciating the effort that goes into supporting our community.
